First certification of a complete system for installation in harsh offshore installations
Sugar Land, USA (April 16, 2019): De Nora, a global leader in electrochemical technologies and the world’s largest provider of electrodes, coatings and complete solutions for electrochemical water and wastewater treatment systems, announces the issuance of the first IECEx and ATEX Hazardous Area Certification for a complete packaged sewage treatment system including an electrical panel, the latest generation OMNIPURE™ Series 64 G2 Ex marine and offshore Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) equipment.
IECEx, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) system for certification to standards relating to equipment for use in explosive atmospheres, uses quality assessment specifications that are based on international standards. While the system is voluntary, it provides an internationally accepted means of proving compliance with IEC standards and because it is used in many national approval scheme, IECEx certification can be used to support national compliance. ATEX is a uniquely European Union directive for protection against explosive atmospheres.
De Nora worked with approved IECEx certification body, Certification Management Limited (CML), to achieve compliance of their OMNIPURE Series 64 G2 Ex sewage treatment systems. Unlike a component-level certification, where an individual part such as a level transmitter or pressure switch is designed, evaluated, tested and certified to meet a particular hazardous area requirement, the IECEx and ATEX standardized product certification permits De Nora to offer complete IMO Type Approved OMNIPURE Series 64 G2 systems for installation in some of the harshest and rigorous offshore installations worldwide.
“These certifications are an exciting development for De Nora because they allow us to better serve our customers with an OMNIPURE Series 64 G2 sewage treatment unit as a single standardized, IECEx and ATEX certified product,” said Dana Casbeer, De Nora product technology manager – OMNIPURE. “This alleviates the often-high cost burden passed onto customers who want to achieve overall technical design and compliance adherence normally encountered on a project to project basis.”

OMNIPURE marine and offshore sewage treatment systems oxidize sewage through an electrolytic process generating sodium hypochlorite for the disinfection of sewage streams. The OMNIPURE Series 64 G2 Ex system has received Type Certification to IMO MEPC.227(64) by Bureau Veritas. As the pioneer in this field, this electrolytic technology has been available to the marine and offshore market since 1983.
