  • BMT and Sonardyne partner on Equinor’s Norwegian Sea gas field
     
    BMT, a leading multidisciplinary management consultancy with strong sector expertise across offshore energy and renewable energy, has teamed with Sonardyne to deliver to Subsea 7 its proven ‘Riser Monitoring System’ (RMS). This industry-leading subsea integrity monitoring solution has been adopted by the world’s largest spar platform, Aasta Hansteen. The Aasta Hansteen Spar platform is operated and owned by Equinor ASA, the Norwegian multinational energy company.

    Located 300 kilometres west of Sandnessjøen on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) in water depths of up to 1,300m, the deepest field development on the NCS, the Aasta Hansteen Spar is installed in a harsh environment utilising highly robust deepwater Steel Catenary Risers (SCR).

    The BMT integrated RMS includes an innovative suite of strain, motion and position sensors deployed by underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to monitor the SCR response in the Touch Down Zone (TDZ) and riser interaction with the Spar FPSO pull tube. The computationally intensive data collated by the RMS is used to validate and bring efficiencies to the Spar and SCR design.

    With extensive experience in complex SCR Riser Monitoring Systems and proprietary ROV-deployed strain gauge assemblies, BMT has developed a unique underwater ROV installed RMS to monitor the integrity of the riser. This development was thanks to collaboration with Sonardyne who provided an innovative underwater acoustic positioning system that supported the subsea riser monitoring solution.

  • Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, has signed an offshore Master Service Agreement (MSA) with the leading international science, technology, engineering and risk management consultancy, BMT.  The three-year agreement will see BMT provide maintenance oil and gas services for the Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai deepwater platforms in Malaysia.   
     
    This is the second time BMT has been awarded an offshore services’ contract demonstrating continuity and Shell’s confidence in the BMT team.  

    Isaac Chia, BMT’s Operations Manager in Kuala Lumpur says: “Working closely with Sabah Shell as a team to understand their expectations is key.  The upgrades and systems’ installations for this contract with Sabah Shell further builds on BMT’s excellent track record in supplying major platform integrity monitoring systems to offshore oil and gas operators.”

    Both deepwater platforms currently have BMT’s Marine Instrumentation Systems (MIS) and Marine Advisory Systems (MAS) installed.  These systems play a critical role in supporting safe and efficient operations of the two offshore platforms. BMT’s maintenance plan will cover major servicing aspects of these systems including calibration checks, software maintenance and updates, remote technical support and analysis. The MSA contract secured with Sabah Shell will allow BMT to provide servicing on the MIS/MAS instrumentation ensuring that its components remain fully functional and deliver accurate data.

    BMT brings valuable experience to this project, and other deepwater oilfield projects, having regularly provided service and maintenance to over 75 platforms around the world. The organisation provides integrity monitoring systems for a wide range of floating offshore oil facilities including the associated subsea risers and mooring systems. It delivers custom-engineered products from design through procurement, assembly, installation and operational support service.

  • The need for production riser integrity monitoring has accelerated in recent years as operators strive to better understand structural issues and potential risks associated with riser systems in increasing water depths and hostile environments.

    BMT’s riser and flowline monitoring systems measure bending and fatigue to assess degradation on many kinds of subsea risers. Designed to be deployed for the lifetime of the asset, BMT’s ROV-Serviceable Subsea Strain Sensor Assembly (SSSA), combines the accuracy of BMT’s strain sensors with the convenience and safety of being ROV serviceable. BMT can provide monitoring systems for many types of risers and flowlines, including: Buoyancy Supported Risers (BSRs), Steel Catenary Risers (SCRs), Single Line Offset Risers (SLORs), Free-Standing Hybrid Risers (FSHRs), Multi-Bore Hybrid Risers (MHRs) and Oil-Offloading Lines (OOLs).

    Sonardyne’s riser profiling system provides a wireless real-time vertical profile of water current speed and direction, and the temperature and inclination of risers deployed from drilling or production vessels. Additionally, high and low frequency riser movement can be monitored and recorded with summary data transmitted to the surface using a combination of SMARTs (Subsea Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology), AMTs (Autonomous Monitoring Transponders) and LBL (Long BaseLine) arrays. The system can be used stand alone or integrated within our acoustic position reference system interfaced to your vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) system.

    BMT and Sonardyne can deliver bespoke subsea systems to monitor mooring lines continuously, detecting and reporting failures promptly to asset managers, thereby allowing safe management of the rig and floating production facility....

  • Mooring line and anchor leg integrity is an area of increasing concern as more and more failures have been reported in the last few years. Monitoring provides valuable information for safe operations, forensic engineering and the validation of design codes for floating moored structures, particularly when mooring line tension is collected simultaneously with metocean parameters.

    BMT and Sonardyne can deliver bespoke subsea systems to monitor mooring lines continuously, detecting and reporting failures promptly to asset managers, thereby allowing safe management of the rig and floating production facility. Such systems can also present mooring line inclination and the line tension data in real-time to the marine control room.

    Several technologies may be customised to match the requirements for monitoring the tension of a mooring line during the installation and operation of an asset, including the telemetry of data to a vessel control room and bespoke alarm displays.

    Sonardyne’s SMART is just such an example. Each mooring line located SMART can transmit statistical information to the surface giving its position, depth and movement.

Performance monitoring of the drilling riser helps reduce risk in the offshore environment by keeping you informed about the response of the riser to the state of the environment in real-time.

    The BMT-Sonardyne riser monitoring system ensures riser system integrity by collecting data with which to evaluate drilling riser offset angles, fatigue damage and the implication of extreme events during operations. Riser response and excitation data required to calibrate the riser numerical design models are obtained through a fully integrated, ROV-deployable instrumentation package of strain and motion sensors, installed at specific points of interest on the riser.

    Data, including real-time BOP-to-riser differential angles, providing crews with warnings and alarms when the riser is operating outside of the permitted operation window, can assist with safety critical decisions while also enabling efficient maintenance programs.

    Operational risk reduction and operating cost savings are the key benefits for commissioning a riser monitoring system as part of a fully integrated marine monitoring system.
