  • HOUSTON – June 13, 2018 – ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE: IO) today announced the 100th deployment of its Marlin offshore operations optimization software. Similar to air traffic control for the marine environment, Marlin supports a step change offshore from traditional manual processes to digital solutions that integrate and share information in real time to enable better, safer decisions. Marlin has helped operators around the world improve their situational awareness and optimize their operational plans.   • HOUSTON – June 14, 2018 – ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE: IO) today announced the second sale of a number of its highly differentiated optical magnetic heading sensors to enable subsea vehicles to quickly reach their desired destinations. In the fourth quarter, successful field trials demonstrated the advanced compasses’ accuracy and robustness in GPS-deprived environments and led to delivery of the first commercial order in the first quarter.


    This example demonstrates how ION can successfully broaden its customer base and diversify its technology into adjacent markets. In less than a year, the Devices business line made agile adjustments to adopt the mature compass offering from ION’s industry-leading towed streamer positioning solution to suit the underwater vehicle market’s navigation requirements.


    "The customer has been really pleased with our optical magnetic heading sensor’s unique performance and how quickly we integrated it into their subsea vehicle precision navigation,” said Chris Usher, Executive Vice President of ION’s Operations Optimization group. “In multiple tests we have demonstrated improved positioning accuracy to under half a percent of the distance travelled, without the aid of GPS or acoustic navigation and without locally calibrating the compass. Our mechanically gimbaled optical magnetic heading sensor does not require calibration across different latitudes as the Earth’s magnetic field changes. We are exploring additional commercial opportunities for our technologies in marine robotics and other industries.”

  • HOUSTON – June 18, 2018 – ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE: IO) and Greensea Systems, Inc. today announced a joint marketing agreement to provide underwater navigation solutions for manned and unmanned underwater vehicle operators. This partnership will accelerate the adoption of ION’s technologies into larger, less cyclic adjacent markets offshore and in the military while providing Greensea with options to integrate ION sensor technology into a growing number of navigation systems. Greensea and ION have already collaborated to integrate ION’s optical magnetic heading sensor into Greensea’s INSpect navigation system to dramatically improve subsea vehicle navigation accuracy in remote GPS-deprived environments.

    Innovative Foil-based Marine Diverter...

  • SailWing™ is designed to provide control of gun strings to maintain even separation and improved source geometry. Because it operates closer to the center line of the vessel, faster tows and reduced turn times can be achieved, significantly reducing survey costs and time. Reduced deviation on source positioning lowers risk when making close passes to obstructions. SailWing eliminates the need for traditional vanes and spreader ropes. Elimination of conventional diverters on long spur lines lowers risk when making close passes near obstructions. The SailWing has very low drag compared to traditional vanes and therefore saves fuel on every job. Since each string is individually controlled by SailWing, deployment and retrievals are safer and more efficient. By controlling each gun string independently, individual gun strings can be retrieved and deployed for maintenance without having to retrieve other strings, which lowers source repair time.

    SAILWINGS ARE PROVIDED AS A COMPLETE TURNKEY SYSTEM, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS:

    SailWing Product Architecture
    → SailWing consists of a series of foils over ropes strung between the head float and the first gun station or bell housing. The foil sizes and number of foils are easily configurable to accommodate a wide variety of survey requirements. An actuator is mounted in the head float and is controlled from the vessel. The actuator receives power and communication through the gun umbilical.

    The Actuator
    → The electric-hydraulic actuator adjusts lift provided by the SailWing. It is controlled by an onboard control computer and
    receives power and commands from the ship via the umbilical. The commands are interpreted by an embedded processor in the actuator which precisely adjusts the angle of attack of the foils.


    SailWing Software
    → The onboard control computer on the vessel receives navigation inputs from either Orca® or Gator™. Based upon user configuration, it automatically sends commands to maintain stable array geometry without the need for spreader ropes. Source configuration can easily be modified on the fly. The software also allows for manual operations for easy optimization of deployment and retrieval.

  • Optical Magnetic Heading Sensor
    MODEL 321 OPTICAL MAGNETIC HEADING SENSOR...

  • The Model 321 is a heading sensor that uses an optical encoder that is magnetically aligned to the earth’s North Pole. It provides
    accurate, reliable measurements under a variety of marine operating conditions worldwide. Because of the unique, patented,
    magnetically coupled optical encoder construction, the 321 is able to provide this accuracy worldwide without recalibration. When
    properly mounted with minimal magnetic interference, and calibrated; this sensor has achieved 0.5 degree accuracy, or better,
    in real world applications. 

    The 321 Heading Sensor is the industry standard in the seismic exploration industry with an installed base of more than 70,000. It has seen service in harsh environments and all latitudes and has been deployed in military, scientific and commercial applications.

    The 0.35 degree resolution, 360 degree roll capability, 44.45mm diameter and 10,000 psi operating pressure enable it to meet many applications.

    A ten bit digital number, indicative of orientation relative to magnetic North, is latched and shifted out serially in a 10-bit binary gray word format. The two-wire interface provides both power and data, minimizing cable wiring requirements.
