  • Aidro, a north Italian hydraulic systems specialist, presents Additive Manufacturing (also called metal 3D printing) as a new technology for the customized solutions both in hydraulics and other applications. 

    Beside its traditional production of hydraulic component and blocks, Aidro has introduced Additive Manufacturing to produce innovative hydraulic manifolds to take advantage of the benefits of 3D printing, such as lightweight, space saving, complex forms. Moreover, with its expertise in Additive Manufacturing, Aidro can design and develop new projects for a wide range of applications, including oil & gas sector.

    Aidro Hydraulics

    In the photo, a comparison between the traditional Aidro manifold for mobile application and a redesigned version produced with a metal 3D printer machine. This manifold has exactly the same function as his predecessor : it controls a doubled acting cylinder with two solenoids valves and two pilot operated check valves. The complete new solution reached a 75% weight reduction and half size dimensions compared to the traditional manifold.

    The main advantages of Additive Manufacturing are the followings:

    • optimize the performance thanks to curved connecting channels and elimination of 90°degrees intersection angles

  • Complex hydraulic components made via metal 3D printing can incorporate details that would be difficult or impossible to duplicate through conventional machining, and weight and size are reduced without compromising performance.

    Without the limitations of conventional machining, parts can be designed for the most efficient combination of production and performance. And internal channels can be optimized for higher flow and lower pressure drop. It’s also possible to produce several different prototypes within hours to determine the best design. Furthermore, components can be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel (AISI 316L), aluminum, titanium, and new materials still under development. Sources of potential leakage from auxiliary drilling and subsequent plugging are eliminated.

    What About Material Properties?

    Because metal 3D printing is relatively new to the field of hydraulics, it raises the question of how the material properties of 3D-printed parts compare to those made by traditional processes. Although typical mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and modulus of elasticity appear to be comparable, depending on material choice, the high pressures often encountered in hydraulic systems merit additional consideration.

    With proper material choice and design, components can be made to withstand these pressures, but they also may encounter shock and pressure pulsations, which are more difficult to accommodate. Manifolds, for example, often have been made from ductile iron or other ductile materials to handle these pulsations, but these materials do not lend themselves to the additive-manufacturing process. Iron and carbon steel materials also fall into that category, because the source material must exist in powder form.

    Alberto Tacconelli, Aidro managing Director,  says that the mechanical proprieties of the 3D printed materials are equivalent to (or in some cases better than) metals produced from bar stock. The results, he adds, are as much the result of design as material.

The production of 3D printed parts is made with Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology with the EOS printer machines. All the 3D printed components are validated and tested. Aidro Solutions Center for AM takes care of all phases, from the design to the production and testing, to guarantee the good quality of products. The freedom to design offered by additive manufacturing, allows Aidro to create a customized solutions that satisfy customers' requirements.

  • Aidro has established a Solutions Center for Additive Manufacturing, enabling AM specialists to design new components, per customer requirements, and bring them to life with Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) also called Selective Laser Melting (SLM). The Solutions Center oversees the entire process, from design to production to testing. Design specialists model new parts with complex geometries and refined designs to reduce weight, save space, and consolidate multiple pieces into just one. Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis is conducted, as are stress tests. These models are then transported to the company’s printer machines where they are printed, and later tested. Finally, with flexible vertical machining equipment, the cavities and surfaces of parts are finished.
