Core drilling has been a central part of petroleum exploration drilling for many decades. The extraction of rock core samples from subsurface formations provide essential information about the reservoir potential and rock properties and is of vital importance for analyzing the reservoir and planning field developments and drainage strategies.
However, despite the wealth of operational experience gathered over time, some significant challenges still adhere to conventional core extraction methods and technologies. These include a considerable time lag between drilling of the geological formations and the downhole logging of formation properties and time-consuming round trips to change between core drilling and conventional drilling equipment. CoreAll’s Intelligent Coring System addresses these shortcomings.
The Intelligent Coring System is the first core drilling solution to incorporate real-time formation evaluation data and the ability to core and drill with the same bottom hole assembly.
CoreAll's patented Intelligent Coring System ICS® is a modular, fully instrumented core drilling assembly. The system features high performance electrical connections, power generation, data processing and storage, and two-way data communication to surface. The Logging While Coring LWC® module provides essential real-time logging information of the core as it enters the core barrel, enabling drillers and geologists to optimize the coring process by evaluating the core in real-time. Current data sets include Gamma Ray, resistivity, temperature, vibrations and inner barrel stall detection.
The Internal Drilling Device, a module still being developed, allows unwanted core material to be drilled away and discharged into the return mud flow. Activation of the unit is controlled from surface, allowing the operator to switch between drilling and coring modes. Trips to change between coring and drilling equipment can thus be reduced or eliminated.
