  • Barge Master and Bosch Rexroth’s ‘Next Generation Gangway’ is in operation on the subsea-support walk-to-work vessel VOS Start from Vroon Offshore Services. The ship is chartered by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind for the installation of wind turbines at the DONG Energy Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm in the Irish Sea, off the west coast of England.   
    To make VOS Start one of the most innovative ships on the market a unique solution was provided by Barge Master and Bosch Rexroth, its partner for the gangway. The gangway is designed and built to the highest standards and certified under the new DNV-GL Standard "Certification of offshore gangways for personeel transfer" (DNVGL-ST-0358).

    The unique Next Generation Gangway

    The motion-compensated gangway is mounted on a height-adjustable pedestal with an integrated elevator enabling a continuous workflow. Additionally, the pedestal makes it possible for the gangway to land on any height, keeping the gangway horizontal and providing stepless transfers.
    Both people and cargo can be transported from the ship deck or the level below to the level of the gangway, where they can instantly cross.
    The gangway has been extensively tested onshore at a specially designed test facility at Bosch Rexroth in Boxtel, the Netherlands. The onshore testing made sure that only a very short period was needed to get the gangway operational on the VOS Start. Only a few days of offshore testing where needed.  
    This next generation gangway, which is operated by a single operator, is equipped with extremely fast sensors and control technology. Movements of the ship can be translated into ‘counter movements’ of the gangway within milliseconds. Because of this the system is able to compensate for wave heights up to 3 meters (Hs) allowing safe transfers.     

    Making the system truly unique is the fact that forces are also measured in the tip of the gangway, which allows for the forces to be kept low. This reduces the possibility of the tip to slip, significantly increasing the workability.

    Successful partnership

    Barge Master is a leading company in the field of motion compensation systems. Its CEO, Martijn Koppert, explained that the partnership with Bosch Rexroth, the drive and control company, was not a coincidence. “We have been in business with Bosch Rexroth already since 2008. We started in a conventional supplier/customer relation, but this has evolved since the development of the Next Generation Gangway. We formed a Joint Project Team, which results in a far better system by using the best expertise available. This is proven by the fact that this gangway is an entirely new concept.”

    The two Dutch companies worked in a close cooperation, using each other’s strengths. As stated by Martijn Koppert, “With this solution users are able to transfer people and goods from ship to platform 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making this solution far better than anything available at the market at this moment. I am confident that, together with Bosch Rexroth, we will optimally serve the offshore wind market with this next generation gangway.”

  • Motion compensated platform

    The BM-T700 is a modular platform with a payload capacity of 700 mT, or it can accommodate for a crane with an average capacity of 160 mT at 12 meters radius. The BM-T700 platform compensates waves up to significant wave height of 2.5 meters. The BM-T700 platform and foundations consist of containerized units, which can be assembled  within 10 working days.

    The BM T700 is designed to increase the safety and workability of offshore construction works. A triangular shaped platform is not moving relatively to the fixed world. It can be used for various forms of construction operations.

  • Motion compensated crane

    The BM-T40 is designed for maintenance support vessels and platform supply vessels. These types of vessel are used to transfer small loads or personnel to (unmanned) offshore oil and gas platforms or wind turbines. 

    The BM-T40 features a small footprint and is designed to compensate for sea induced motions of a knuckle boom crane with a lifting capacity of 15mT at a 10 meter radius or 5mT at a 20 meter radius. 

    Typical loads include hoses, tools, spare parts, maintenance equipment, replacement parts of small wind turbines and solar panels weighing 1.5mT to 5mT. The BM-T40 is also perfectly suited for grouting operations. These loads will have to be placed at a typical radius of 20m, at a typical height of 15m to 30m above sea-level.

    Besides the suitability of safely lifting loads, the T40 is manriding certified for safe personnel transfer.

  • Motion compensated gangway

    Motion compensated gangways are the preferred way for safe and efficient crew transfer in offshore operations. For instance on Walk to Work vessels used for the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms and oil & gas platforms. Marine access through a gangway is more efficient, more reliable and safer than helicopter flights.

    The high performance Barge Master & Bosch Rexroth Gangway (BM-Gangway) is fit for purpose. It uses active motion compensation to land on any kind of offshore facility, without the need for a modified landing area. Its modular design lets you to choose the configuration that's best for your project.

    The BM-Gangway 3.0 compensates vessel motions up to a significant wave height (Hs) of 3 meter. This allows the gangway to be placed at any deck location and height. For even more functionality other modules are available, for instance a 1.000kg integrated motion compensated lifting winch. It can also be fitted on a pedestal with integrated elevator, making it possible to land on any height and have a continuous workflow.

    By combining the gangway with a BM-T40 motion compensated crane on one vessel, the hydraulic power unit, motion sensors, operators, spare parts and maintenance services can be shared, leading to lower overall costs. The systems function as a backup of each other as well: the gangway is able to lift cargo and the crane is able to transfer people.
