 Press Releases

  • Digital switchgear integrates the latest digital technologies within ABB’s well-known and established medium-voltage switchgear. Utilizing these new concepts is revolutionizing power distribution.

ABB today announced the latest addition to its digital switchgear offering, SafeGear® Digital, which integrates innovative, yet proven, technologies, enabling customers to meet higher performance requirements while adapting to the growing sophistication of power distribution systems.

Digital switchgear, as part of the ABB Ability™ portfolio of connected solutions, is based on the optimized integration of current and voltage sensors into medium-voltage switchgear, combined with the latest Relion® protection and control relays, and the capability of the IEC 61850 standard for communication. This new technology for protection, control, and automation, when applied to conventional switchgear, results in a solution that is continuously self-supervising, with maximum error detection within a system.

Digitalization creates efficiency gains, including 25 percent footprint reductions and weight optimization. Installation and commissioning times are decreased up to 25 percent and delivery capabilities are up to 30 percent faster compared with conventional switchgear.

With digital switchgear, modifications are easy to implement when electrical loads are changed or added or a need for adaptation is identified late in the switchgear project. This new generation of switchgear allows for flexibility and expansion of the equipment without the need for complex additional wiring. Digital switchgear is easily adapted, as changes can be made using software logic in the protection relays, using the concept of interoperability in the IEC 61850 standard for communication, bringing with it both operational efficiency and unprecedented flexibility.

This new offering creates a simpler and more reliable system to provide consistent power distribution, as well as cost savings through reduction of maintenance requirements. It is a perfect fit for environments where a reliable power supply must be ensured and personnel are limited, such as oil refineries, utility substations, and data centers.

“Reliability and simplicity breed safety, our utmost concern in providing solutions to our customers,” said Ken Alloway, General Manager of ABB Electrification Products, Distribution Solutions – ANSI Switchgear. “Simplification of the control system to make it more reliable and safe and by providing these benefits through digitalization, we are taking the next dramatic leap forward in advancing the technology of switchgear solutions.”

ABB was the first to offer digital switchgear to the global market, launching its first MV digital switchgear in 2014 with UniGear Digital. ABB will be demonstrating the SafeGear Digital advanced switchgear solution at the OTC Show’s celebrated 50th annual event in Houston, TX at ABB booth #3415.

  • A new digital platform will give oil and gas firms instant access to 150+ global experts and speed up their ability to improve performance; potentially adding millions of dollars to their bottom line every year.

The ABB AbilityTM Process Performance Dashboard connects oil and gas firms with ABB’s vast pool of operations experts and advanced data analysis technology.

It enables operators to use the ever-increasing amount of data they are generating to rapidly identify and fix performance weaknesses.  The cloud-based service measures the performance of oil & gas facilities against various carefully designed indicators, including start-up time and operator interventions.

This data is then analyzed by the 150-strong team of experts at the ABB Ability Collaborative Operations Centre; a recently expanded facility in Oslo, Norway, which provides insights on performance in the oil, gas and chemicals sectors.

Results are fed back via the dashboard, quickly exposing areas of improvement and highlighting services that could address them.

In an environment where previous years’ of low oil prices have embedded an industry culture of thrift, the dashboard’s launch comes as operators continue to look to improve efficiencies, cash flow and the performance of existing assets.

ABB data shows that a well-managed approach to process performance improvement can boost production by around five per cent. On a 50,000-barrel-a-day platform (at US$50 per barrel), this amounts to approximately US$35m in additional annual income.

Brandon Spencer, vice-president of Oil, Gas & Chemicals for ABB in North America explains the real benefit to customers: “Squeezing the maximum value out of every dollar spent is vital for operators in the current climate. Continual performance improvement can have a huge impact on the bottom line and enables firms to thrive in challenging conditions.

“Through access to world class expertise and the latest digital and data-driven innovations, the new dashboard accelerates the rate of this ongoing improvement. It is also entirely scalable, meaning companies can respond quickly to new challenges and opportunities as they arise.”

Digital collaboration - a rising trend in the oil and gas sector – underpins ABB’s new offering. Tighter margins and the pressure to adjust to digitalization have seen companies working more closely together in recent years; sharing both the burden of costs and the benefits of new insights.

Services provided via the dashboard support collaboration between the ABB Collaborative Operations Centre, the customers’ various assets and their operational headquarters.

The ABB AbilityTM Process Performance Dashboard is available now, having been extensively trialed, including by a large oil and gas firm in the North Sea.  The company was able to break the world class uptime of 95 per cent across its facilities, on the back of the dashboard and its associated services.

The dashboard will be officially launched at the 2018 Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, Texas, which runs from 30 April to 3 May. ABB will be represented at Stand #3514.

  • ABB AbilityTM digital solutions, expert project execution and advanced services will significantly reduce capital expenditure (CAPEX) for the new offshore development field, and ensure safe and efficient long term operation

ABB announced that it will provide integrated ABB AbilityTM automation and safety systems to Statoil’s new Johan Castberg oil field development project in Norway. ABB’s solutions and services will help to reduce the CAPEX for the project significantly. Integrated control, safety and communication will be key to the successful operation of this new field.

Located in the Barents Sea, north of the Arctic Circle, the new field will be developed with an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading production vessel) and subsea installation with 30 wells. The new field has proven volumes estimated at between 400 and 600 million barrels of oil, and is the world’s largest new offshore oil project. The original CAPEX estimate at $12.9 billion has been reduced to approximately $8 billion.

ABB will provide integrated ABB AbilityTM System 800xA automation and safety systems, including advanced simulation and related services to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of the offshore FPSO. The order is valued at around $25 million.

Working closely with design contractor Aker Solutions ABB will provide engineering, installation and commissioning for flawless execution of the project and ensure that production runs efficiently from day one of operation.

“Digitalization and advanced safety and automation systems are key to safer, more efficient, more reliable and more environmentally friendly operation of oil, gas, and chemical facilities,” said Per Erik Holsten, Managing Director ABB Oil, Gas, and Chemicals. “Combined with our vast experience in advanced process control, and subsea and power systems, project execution is streamlined, cost are reduced, and long-term operations are safer and more efficient.”

ABB has extensive experience in gas production and optimization, and a long history of successful collaboration with Statoil on numerous projects around the world. All major oil and gas installations above the Arctic Circle in Norway use ABB’s automation and safety systems. This experience, combined with four decades of providing safety and automation systems to the industry, were important factors in this project win.

The field is scheduled to commence operation in 2022 and will have an estimated production lifespan of 30 years. ABB’s deliveries will start in late 2018.

ABB’s leading portfolio of digital solutions, ABB AbilityTM, combines ABB’s deep domain expertise with network connectivity and the latest digital technologies to help customers develop new processes and advance existing ones by providing insights and optimizing planning and controls for real-time operations.
