  • /PRNewswire/ -- AbTech Industries, Inc. an environmental technologies firm was invited to participate at a major yogurt company's manufacturing facility for treatment of its wastewater discharge.  The goal of the treatment system was to reduce phosphorus in their discharge to avoid paying excessive fines to its local PTOW.  The current plant process uses a combination of attached and suspended growth reactor treatment, followed by a secondary clarifier for before final discharge.  The existing wastewater system achieves an average total phosphorus level in their discharge of ~ 4-10 mg/l.  The majority of the total phosphorus is represented as ortho-phosphate.

    Using AbTech's unique adsorptive media as a final polisher for phosphorus, onsite treatability testing demonstrated removal down to 41 ppb phosphorus.  Meeting the low level of phosphorus is possible with a retention time as low as 30 minutes.

  • AbTech Industries, an environmental technologies firm, was invited to participate at a power generation station for treatment of its wastewater discharge.  The goal of the treatment system was to reduce selenium in their discharge to meet the new Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELG) standard of < 12 ppb.  The current plant process uses physical-chemical treatment, followed by a bio-reactor for selenium reduction.  The existing wastewater system achieves an average selenium level in their discharge of ~ 50 ppb.

    Using AbTech’s unique adsorptive media as a final polisher for selenium, treatability testing demonstrated removal down to 6 ppb selenium.  Meeting the ELG requirement of 12 ppb selenium is possible with a retention time as low as 15 minutes.  A pilot demonstration plant is set to begin in July of 2016 to further validate the process.

    Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls

    EMERGENCY OIL SPILL RESPONSE

    Smart Sponge Line Skimmers is designed to allow water to pass through the product while absorbing sheen levels of hydrocarbons in low energy flow environments. The Smart Sponge absorbs the hydrocarbons turning them into an inert stable solid that does not leak or leach.

    HYDROCARBON REMOVAL

    Line Skimmers are designed to absorb and encapsulate hydrocarbons and oil in non-confined water flows.  They are ideal for creating lines of hydrocarbon protection in areas such as ponds, lagoons and still water, and sheen from ships in port.  Smart Sponge Line Skimmers are unique in their ability to lay flat behind barrier booms to remove and permanently bind oils found in oily sheen that wash over the top of the protective barrier boom.

    Once the hydrocarbon is in contact with the Smart Sponge, it is permanently bound to the structure of the polymer and can not be released under any amount of pressure.  This makes the Smart Sponge material operationally superior for removing sheen levels of hydrocarbons (15 – 300 ppm).

    A Line Skimmer is a temporary floating barrier used to contain an oil spill. Booms are used to reduce the possibility of polluting shorelines and other resources, and to help make recovery easier. Booms help to concentrate oil in thicker surface layers so that skimmers, vacuums, or other collection methods can be used more effectively.  They are available in many shapes and sizes, with various levels of effectiveness in different types of water conditions.  Often the first containment method to be used and the last equipment to be removed from the site of an oil spill, they are "the most commonly used and most environmentally acceptable response technique to clean up oil spills in the United States.

    INSTALLATION

    Installation of Line Skimmers requires no tools. Thread a rope lanyard or other suitable material to the grommets or through the center handle and attach the free end to an available stationary structure.  The Line Skimmer may also be deployed in a “U”-shaped system on a given body of water such as a lake or a pond.  When oil spill enters the water the oil sheen will be surrounded by booms, only absorbing and solidifying oil while repelling water.

  • Many industrial plants have new tighter wastewater regulations being imposed.  This can be observed with lower acceptable levels of phosphorus and heavy metals to which a plant can send to a POTW or to surface discharge under a NPDES permit. 

    Smart Sponge HM technology is an excellent phosphorus and metals polisher for added insurance to meet compliance.  Phosphorus is one of the major nutrients contributing in the increased eutrophication of lakes and natural waters. Its presence causes many water quality problems including increased purification costs, decreased recreational and conservation value of impoundments, loss of livestock and the possible lethal effect of algal toxins on drinking water.  In most municipal and industrial plants with biological wastewater treatment, supplemental phosphorus must be added to insure an adequate supply for bacterial growth.  But nutrient enrichment of receiving waters is a major water quality issue in North America.  The USEPA, states and provinces have or are adding phosphorus discharge limits to industrial discharge permits, sometimes at very low levels. Many plants already have limits for phosphorus and are struggling to achieve compliance–using aerated lagoons and activated sludge processes.  Due to increased enforcement of selenium regulations and an increased understanding of health and environmental effects the need to be able to efficiently treat selenium has taken on an increased importance.

  • AbTech’s Ironwood media was created to solve a variety of environmental regulatory challenges including water eutrophication and metals contamination.  The media is capable of removing Orthophosphate and a variety of soluble metals from wastewaters, suitable to help meet most discharge requirements.  With retention times averaging 30-45 minutes for difficult to remove contaminants such as phosphorus and selenium.  Ironwood can be applied using well known conventional methods. 

    APPLICATION

    ​Ironwood is an innovative media using metal nanocomposites and renewable materials to adsorb contaminants.  Its two media forms allow for economical flexibility in a wide variety of applications. 

    Ironwood Upflow Column Application

    The first media form is a wood chip that is applied upflow in a filtration column design.  Sizing and capacity are based upon the influent water analysis and proper retention time required to remove the contaminant(s).  Upon exhaustion, the media can be regenerated onsite or offsite as a service.  If onsite regeneration is preferred, then basic and acidic solutions are used to recondition the media to near full adsorptive capacity.  

    Powdered Consumable Application​

    The second media form is a powder that can be applied within a bioreactor or clarifier.  The powdered form will allow for use within existing infrastructure to save on CAPEX and OPEX expenditures.  Media dosing is based on the influent water analysis and proper retention time required to remove the contaminant (s).

    Once exhausted, the media will settle to the bottom of the clarifier along with the sludge and can be dewatered and disposed.   New media is introduced as needed.  

    Coupled with the addition of magnetite as a ballast, Ironwood powder will settle at an enhanced rate and can be recovered for multiple uses within the process until exhausted.  Magnetite is a fully inert material, produced though mining operations, and possesses a specific gravity of 5.2.  ​

    SMART SPONGE HH

    AbTech’s Smart Sponge Heavy Metals (HM) media uses renewable resource based metal nanocomposites extruded into a macro-porous sponge.  The media is in the form of hematite/magnetite and will bind to phosphorus resulting in removal rates as high as 98%.   When applied as tertiary treatment, Smart Sponge HM has been show to present low capital cost, smaller footprint and significantly lower operating costs than conventional treatment systems.
