  • BEI Kimco introduces a new, rugged brushless DC (BLDC) motor that was developed specifically to withstand the harshest conditions found in the Oil Exploration Industry. The robust design also makes it suitable for other applications found in severe environments where failure is not an option. As the extraction of oil reaches greater depths, drilling equipment must continue to operate reliably in increasing temperatures and pressures, while also enduring extreme shock and vibration. In an industry where one hour of downtime can cost upwards of $100,000, having durable products that have been tested and proven to last is crucial. In some cases, replacing a motor in drilling applications can take up to ten hours or more. BEI Kimco understands this need and has designed a motor that can stand up to the challenge, and has the testing results to prove it.

    The new 1.5” diameter DII15-60-201A High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) brushless DC motor provides the ideal solution for severe down-hole applications such as mud pulser valves, caliper deployment and sensor positioning. The motor has been successfully tested to operate under continuous duty in temperatures up to 205ºC and pressures up to 30,000 psi.

    As Walter Smith, Applications Engineer/Project Manager explains, “BEI Kimco is among the few companies that have subjected their design to an extensive environmental test protocol at 30K PSI. This qualification test data proves motor performance in these deep drilling conditions where temperature, pressure, shock and vibration extremes combine to create a destructive environment for equipment operation.”

    To achieve the durability of this new motor, BEI Kimco took a design with nearly two decades of success in the field and pushed the performance envelope into the HPHT realm. The resulting motor features integral Hall commutation and uses Rare Earth Magnets to support high operating efficiencies and corrosion resistance. Designed to withstand shock to 1000g’s and vibration to 25g’s, the new BLDC motor is built to endure the most extreme environmental conditions. To fit a variety of installations, the DII15-60-201A can be customized for gearbox or other feedback device options. In addition, winding variations are offered to meet a wide range of controller voltages and currents.

  • BEI Kimco has packed new functionality into its popular VCA Developer’s Kit. Enhancements to the kit include an upgraded controller with I/O Board and straightforward connections that eliminate soldering ‒ both changes make it easier and faster than ever for customers to start building voice coil actuator (VCA) prototypes. 
     
    The VCA Developer’s Kit is a simple ‘solution in a box’ for people that want to use a VCA but are reluctant to tackle figuring out which controller and software to specify to put together a working system. The kit answers all the questions needed to get a VCA system up and running, including where to source components, how to put components together, and how to program the parts to perform the desired motions. Users can easily develop an actuation system and demonstrate a working design concept without needing to separately specify the electronics for a complete control system.
     
    Each kit includes a VCA with a built-in feedback sensor and a programmable controller with MotionLab Software that runs on the user’s local PC. The upgraded controller incorporates an Input/Ouput board that allows physical inputs and outputs such as push buttons (digital inputs), LEDs (digital outputs), and potentiometers (analog input), along with an over-ride for customers who wish to use their own. The controller can operate in open or closed loop modes, is internally compensated for high linearity, and supports coordinated multi-axis applications. Other improved kit functionality is more intuitive connectivity without soldering, which makes wiring prototype systems easier. The supplied connector simply screws into the leads of the VCA, thereby jump-starting builds.
     
    “The improvements to our VCA Developer’s Kit make it easier than ever for customers to get started building VCA prototypes,” says Jim McNamara, BEI Kimco Senior Applications Engineer. “With the excellent feedback we’ve received on the original package design, we’re certain the new version will make it even more popular.”
     
    The kit is available in six different configurations, each with a different VCA that is paired with the appropriate controller PCBA to drive the VCA being used. Sample programs for flow, motion, oscillation, timers, and memory are included.  A flash drive provides all necessary links to software and set-up instructions and a configuration file that can drive the VCA for start-up. Part numbers kits are DK-LAS13-18, DK-LAS13-56, DK-LAS16-23, DK-LAS22-42, DK-LAS28-53 and LAS43-88.  
     
    VCA prototypes built with the kit can be used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial markets such as Medical, Laboratory, Automation, Military, Aerospace and Education.     HOUSTON, TX - March 30, 2017
     - BEI Kimco, a brand of Sensata Technologies, has announced immediate availability of validation test results for its enhanced Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor DII15-60-201A in a completed Validation Test Report. As substantiated by the testing, the motor can operate reliably under the extremely harsh conditions of oil and gas exploration applications. The Validation Test Report will be available to attendees at the upcoming Offshore Technology Conference, Booth #4519, May 1-4, 2017 at NRG Park in Houston, Texas, where the new motor will be showcased.

    The extensive environmental test protocol for the enhanced BEI Kimco model DII15-60-201A High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) BLDC motor was conducted and certified by an independent Environmental Test Lab to validate the thermal, pressure, vibrational/shock load ratings of the motor throughout its operational life.

    The Test Report describes test procedures, test data for each test sequence, certifications achieved, and documents the type of test equipment used throughout the process. The testing validates that the DII15-60-201A can operate reliably under continuous duty in temperatures up to 205 ºC, atmospheric pressures of up to 30,000 psi and shocks/vibrational loads approaching 1000g’s/25g’s respectively. The 1.5” diameter DII15-60-201A HPHT BLDC motor provides the ideal solution for harsh down-hole applications such as mud pulser valves, caliper deployment and sensor positioning. The robust design also makes it suitable for other severe environmental applications.

    The DII15-60-201A incorporates a proprietary integral Hall commutation circuit, and structural enhancements coupled with BEI Kimco’s advanced magnets to support high operating efficiencies and durability. Other variations include custom gearbox interfaces and alternate winding options.

  • The Voice Coil Actuator (VCA) Developer’s Kit from BEI Kimco is a completely self-contained kit including a VCA with built-in feedback sensor and a programmable controller with motion control software that runs on the user’s local PC. The kit allows users to take advantage of the inherent benefits of VCAs without needing to separately specify the necessary electronics for a complete control system.

    Using this invaluable device, customers can quickly develop an actuation system and demonstrate a working design concept. Users can control velocity, position, force, reciprocation, and acceleration in applications such as valve control, beam steering, clamping, and up to multi-axis servo control.

    Six models of VCAs are available for use in the Developer’s Kit. Each VCA is paired with the appropriate controller PCBA that is recommended to drive the particular VCA. The controller can operate in open or closed loop modes, is internally compensated for high linearity, and supports coordinated multi-axis applications. A flash drive is included in the kit which provides the necessary links to all software and set-up instructions, including driver downloads, user manual, specification sheets for the VCA’s and a configuration file that can be used to drive the VCA for easy start-up.

    Each stock VCA Developer's Kit comes with an external threaded shaft, unless otherwise specified. Selecting a different shaft option will not increase the price of the Developer's Kit, but may affect availability.
