  • SAVAGE, Minnesota, November 29, 2016 –  Beckhoff Automation introduced a new standard in ultra-compact Industrial PC technology at the SPS IPC Drives 2016 trade show in Nuremberg, Germany. The new C6015 Industrial PC (IPC) opens up new application areas for PC-based control technology, especially those with pronounced cost or space restraints. Fully suited to industrial applications, the multi-core IPC measures just 82 x 82 x 40 mm, demonstrating the extensive scalability of PC-based control technology from Beckhoff.

    The new device is just one third the size of the C6905, which was previously the smallest control cabinet IPC in the comprehensive Beckhoff portfolio. Price savings of approximately 25 percent also place the device well below the previously least expensive x86 IPCs from Beckhoff. These features facilitate highly cost-effective implementation of automation, visualization and system-wide communication in small and mid-size applications with a minimal device footprint. As a result, the space-saving device opens up areas of use where PC-based control technology has not been used thus far, or where motherboards must be integrated as expensive custom solutions.

    Uncompromising industrial quality

    Despite its extremely compact and inexpensive form-factor, the ultra-compact C6015 IPC makes no compromises when it comes to industrial use. This includes the high computing power of the integrated Intel® Atom™ CPU that features up to four processor cores. Moreover, the IPC leverages a robust, aluminum/die-cast zinc housing, designed for passive cooling and long-term availability. The device also offers a full range of standard features for industrial environments, such as extended operating temperature range up to +55 °C and high resistance to vibration and shock.

    The C6015 is also extremely flexible with regard to its many installation options. It can be mounted both vertically and horizontally on the rear wall of a control cabinet or attached to a DIN rail. Even in the tightest installation spaces, this permits various mounting scenarios with flexible orientation of the IPC. Due to the small dimensions of the device, this represents an important feature: when connecting up to six separate cables, it is crucial with the small design that the connections can be optimally aligned to the cable routing as dictated by the machine layout.

                Apart from that, the full range of onboard equipment and interface configuration together meet the requirements for a universally applied IPC: a 30 GB SSD and Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system make the C6015 a powerful automation device even in its most basic configuration. Windows 7 and Windows 10 are also optionally available. Further hardware features include 2 GB DDR3L-RAM (expandable by the vendor up to 4 GB), a display port connection, an on-board Dual-Ethernet adapter with 2 x 100/1000Base-T connection and ports for both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0.

  • SAVAGE, Minnesota, December 1, 2016 – Beckhoff Automation has announced the direct integration of OPC UA Pub/Sub UDP communication into the company’s TwinCAT 3 software runtime. This paves the way for the straightforward configuration of OPC UA publishers and subscribers, as well as real-time data exchange.

    A new extension of the OPC UA specification, which Beckhoff played a prominent role in helping develop within the OPC Foundation, introduces the publisher/subscriber principle into the established and standardized OPC UA communication protocol. Through the early integration of the Pub/Sub UDP extension, Beckhoff has emerged once again as an early adopter of OPC technologies.

    One particular advantage is the much simplified configuration that results from direct integration into the TwinCAT 3 engineering environment from Beckhoff. Communication is initiated directly from the TwinCAT 3 runtime, which creates a deterministic and therefore real-time-capable communication channel via OPC UA.

    Advantages of publisher/subscriber communication
    Conventional client/server applications are decoupled from one another in publisher/subscriber-based data communication and no longer need to "know" each other. The publisher simply sends its data, as a UDP multicast in this case, to a multicast group. The subscribers receive the data by subscribing to the multicast group instead of the actual device.

    These advantages can be utilized in all areas of machine design, plant engineering and building automation technology. This is especially true in M2M scenarios within machine networks, for example, in small manufacturing systems as well as complex machines and buildings.

    According to the current roadmap for the OPC UA specification, this extension is expected to be finalized by the OPC Foundation in early 2017. Accordingly, Beckhoff plans a timely product release to accommodate the extension in TwinCAT 3 automation software.

  • SAVAGE, Minnesota, September 28, 2016 – Hot on the heels of continued rapid growth in automation sales in the southern U.S., Beckhoff Automation has opened a regional sales and support office in Plano, Texas. A significant move in expanding local customer service capabilities, this new 2,600 square-foot office will provide high-level sales and engineering expertise, particularly for customers in the south-central United States.

    The eighth such regional facility in the U.S., the Plano facility includes sales offices, engineering labs and training facilities. Customers throughout the area now enjoy the convenience of attending more local training sessions focused on Beckhoff hardware and software solutions, as well as various areas of programming such as PLC, motion control, safety technology, IoT connectivity and more. “This new regional office in Plano is the latest investment by Beckhoff in North America to intensify our local presence for customers,” explains Aurelio Banda, CEO and President, Beckhoff Automation. “We are also opening a new office in the Cincinnati area, with additional offices and expansions for Beckhoff Canada and Beckhoff Mexico to follow shortly, further enhancing our local footprint in North America.”
