SubCtech’s (”Subsea Technologies for the Marine Environment”) team already has more than 30 years of experience in the subsea and marine technology. Today, with 70+ employees, the company is still privately owned. We offer underwater technologies, subsea solutions and ocean monitoring systems. We find solutions in close collaboration with our clients – in the industry, in science and offshore oil+gas. Li-Ion batteries, e.g. pCO2 analyzers and system solutions are our core products and one-stop service.

SubCtech is proud to release the first fully qualified subsea 2 MWh Energy Storage System (ESS) of its kind! Right now, the system is being used for operational use!

 Press Releases

  • Our latest innovation is already causing waves across the industry: the 2 MWh Subsea Energy Storage System (ESS).

It has been a labour of love over the past two years and in the meantime successfully passed its final field testing stage: the system has been commissioned and tested in situ and thus already reaches the Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL 6) according to API17Q.

The ESS is the first of its kind world-wide reaching full API17F qualification as well as UN T38.3 certification for air, sea and street transport as well as  DNV 2.7-3 as Portable offshore units.  We are  truly proud of developing and building a unique battery system in just under 2.5 years whilst reaching highest international manufacturing standards at the same time.

We have been broadcasting a construction diary on our website, sharing all the key milestones towards the final subsea testing stage. After our hardworking team had completed all active manufacturing measures on the ESS  it was released heading towards its final commissioning!

Each Battery Storage Skid (BSS) has a total power of 1 MWh - the actual ESS, has a total of 2 MWh. This is simply achieved by connecting two of them in parallel. Presently 6 units can be connected in a way to provide a maximum of 6 MWh in total.

The ESS operates with an advanced redundancy concept and is equipped with innovative features such as AC charging, an AC output converter and auto-configuration via our SmartBMS™ and BCM (Battery Control Module, based on our proven NetDI® control technology).

The redundancy concept of the ESS ensures an uninterrupted power supply. This design enables our client to minimise down-time of its subsea system.

Especially noteworthy is the auto-configuration via SmartBMS™. This intelligent battery management system (BMS) automatically optimises the operation of the energy systems from cell level to module level and adapts to the respective requirements. This not only maximises efficiency but also extends the lifespan of the batteries and thus availability as well as reliability or the subsea facility.

A so-called Power Skid acts as the converter module and interface between the user’s subsea system and the ESS. An Acoustic Telemetry Modem (ATM) can be used as backup for underwater wireless communication over long distances e.g. up to 6000m.

We are really excited about the release of our latest innovation: The Subsea 1 to 6 MWh Energy Storage System (ESS) and lookforward to being able to offer a unique solution for providing or storing energy for markets where it is commonly needed: energy production, buffering for renewable energy facilities as well as other applications We are eager to become the market leader for large subsea energy storage and subsea-UPS systems with our cost effective solution.

  • High-Performance, highly reliable and high-safety Li-ion Energy Storage System (ESS) for offshore subsea applications. Designed for deployments of up to 25 years. The ESSs are typically used as backup system integration acting as your offshore renewable energy source. The batteries of the ESS are fully API17F qualified and certified to UN T38.3. The subsea skids are qualified accordingly.

Typical applications for our Energy Storage Systems:

    • Backup energy source for offshore applications with high energy demands (>1 MWh)
    • At Oil & Gas production facilities to ensure that critical control systems and sensors are continuously powered
