  • Compactness, reliability, and long service life make the new Hägglunds Atom to the ideal motor also for mobile applications

The smallest of the Hägglunds hydraulic motors from Bosch Rexroth has been transformed: The Hägglunds Atom takes over from the existing Hägglunds CAb – supplying not only more revolutions per minute, but also far more power than motors of similar size. The result is a tiny, power-dense package ideal for mobile, maritime and recycling applications.

The Hägglunds Atom is a powerhouse in miniature, with a maximum torque of up to 13.6 kNm and an outer diameter of only 350 mm. It has a maximum speed up to 400 rpm, depending on frame size. All sizes allow maximum pressure up to and including its maximum speed, meaning an output power of up to 394 kW – with a motor weight of 52 to 102 kg.

    Ready for tough applications
The Hägglunds Atom is suitable for mobile, maritime and recycling applications. The compact and lightweight motor fits easily on a winch on land or at sea, for example. Besides its peak pressure of up to 420 bar lets it deal easily with shock loads. That opens the door to smaller shredders and other machines in tough and unpredictable applications.

“The Hägglunds Atom is rugged and robust, like our larger Hägglunds motors,” says Wolfram Ulrich, Vice President Sales Hägglunds products and solutions at Bosch Rexroth. “That makes it just as dependable as it is versatile.”

  • Hägglunds is entering a daring space with the Hägglunds Quantum range of hydraulic motors. The range does away with established barriers, combining torque and speed with previously unthinkable efficiency. For direct drives in heavy-duty applications, it creates a powerful new reality.

Bending the laws of size, strength and speed
The Hägglunds Quantum range shapes proven strengths into an extraordinary new performance curve. It offers a top speed of over 150 rpm, yet it provides a sustainable maximum torque of more than 350 kNm. At corner power, where the two extremes meet, users can achieve a mind-bending 3 MW – without sacrificing compactness or efficiency.

“The Hägglunds Quantum range rewrites the rules of power density, especially when it comes to efficiency at higher speeds,” says Tor Jensen, Vice President of Sales, Hägglunds. “By stretching the limits so far beyond previous solutions, it introduces possibilities for greener operation, mobile applications and more.”

One range with two powerful aspects
Within the Hägglunds Quantum range are two motors with shared DNA. Hägglunds Quantum is the new name for the Hägglunds CB, which has evolved so significantly over time that it can no longer be considered the same motor. Tweaks in design and materials have increased its efficiency and tripled its life expectancy, making it the ideal basis for a bold new step.

That step is the Hägglunds Quantum Power, which merges a slim new connection block with this reliable foundation. Through additional ports and innovative internal design, the block enables far higher speeds while retaining full torque capacity at high efficiency. Consequently, the Hägglunds Quantum Power can deliver high power with greater economy and sustainability than any previous solution.

“The two parts of the Hägglunds Quantum range, Hägglunds Quantum and Hägglunds Quantum Power, create a seamless curve without gaps in speed or torque,” says Jensen. “One part reflects the constant, long-term improvement that we pursue in all Hägglunds solutions. The other is a result of radical new thinking – a true quantum leap.”

  • Bosch Rexroth AG and PetrolValves S.p.A. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the electrification of subsea process valves with high Safety Integrity Level requirements, such as Subsea Safety Isolation Valves (SSIV). Both companies are already working on a solution that connects PetrolValves subsea valves with the Rexroth actuator eSEA Drive. Operation and control are carried out via simple 24 V DC electric power supply. The new development will reduce the investment and operating costs of subsea systems for the storage of captured carbon (CCS/CCUS) and for the safe transport of green hydrogen (H2) produced offshore using renewable energy.

The biggest challenge in the use of offshore systems for the capture and storage of CO2 and the use of green hydrogen (H2) is to reduce the total cost of ownership. A significant lever for cost reduction is electrification, for example through the eSEA actuators developed by Bosch Rexroth, which cover all safety-relevant movements at water depths of up to 4,000 meters. They are a particularly economical alternative to the hydraulically driven actuators that have been normally used. Until now, especially, large subsea process valves with high Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements could not benefit from electrification due to the lack of a suitable and affordable drive solution.

Bosch Rexroth and PetrolValves, the leading supplier of Subsea Safety Isolation Valves (SSIV), are collaborating on the electrification of large subsea process valves and have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect. The agreement covers the development and qualification of new valve variants, such as a 10- or 12-inch ball valves, as well as the promotion of these solutions to the market. “Together, we will offer to the operators the opportunity to introduce innovative all-electric technologies that will reduce the acquisition and operating costs of their plants, minimizing the energy consumption and protecting the environment”, said Miguel Vallcorba Piera, Chief Commercial Officer of PetrolValves.

Both companies have already implemented this solution using an eSEA Drive from Bosch Rexroth to electrify a subsea 5’’ gate valve, and a full-scale prototype is currently in the final phase of qualification tests to reach Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 by mid-2024.

“Our solution eliminates the entire hydraulic system for valve actuation: central hydraulic power units above water and kilometers of hydraulic pipes. This simplifies the design and speeds up the engineering and commissioning of offshore systems, thus improving the overall response time from the control system and the safety level”, says Dr. Alexandre Orth, Head of Subsea Automation Systems, Bosch Rexroth AG. In addition, machine-learning based condition monitoring adds further operational and safety benefits.

PetrolValves and Bosch Rexroth will present their joint development at OTC 2024, the Offshore Technology Conference, in Houston, Texas, at the NRG Center on May 6, in the All-Electric Subsea and Wells session (09:30 to 12:00).
