Armada Dynamic Payloads Control software suite to be developed on OPENSEA and in collaboration with Greensea

Richmond, Vermont USA– Greensea Systems, creator of OPENSEA®, the universal open architecture software platform for the marine industry, entered into a contract with Ocean Infinity to provide OPENSEA as the open architecture platform that the Armada Dynamic Payloads Control (DPC) will be built upon. During the contract, Greensea and Ocean Infinity will collaborate on creating advanced capabilities for robotic control and supervision for the Armada fleet’s payload. The DPC will provide a framework for supervising and controlling an ROV system, including the deck gear and launch and recovery system, by operators located at any of Ocean Infinity’s remote control  centers. Through the OPENSEA API and OPENSEA SDK interfaces, Greensea, Ocean Infinity, or any partner can easily plug into the Armada DPC to add functionality to the fleet through the open architecture interfaces provided by OPENSEA.

“Greensea is excited to collaborate with Ocean Infinity on this pioneering technology,” states Ben Kinnaman, Greensea CEO. “Their plan is the most radical shakeup to the way work has been done on and under the sea since ROVs were developed. This type of paradigm shift can only happen when barriers are removed and multiple companies can collaborate. That’s what an open architecture platform, like OPENSEA, does. It removes barriers and fosters collaboration so advancement can happen.”

Chelsea Allen, Program Manager on the Ocean Infinity Armada program for Greensea, says “A project of this size and complexity requires everyone involved to become collaborators working towards the same vision. Greensea has developed a work environment that supports that kind of collaboration across many contributors. This combined with our OPENSEA platform and maintaining a move-the-ball mindset helps us meet the demands that this project requires, and we’re having a blast doing it!”

“The Armada project is the most exciting work of my career, and I am truly thrilled to be a part of it.” states Heath Hescock, Senior Robotics Engineer for Greensea. “We discuss the challenges daily with Ocean Infinity and the numerous clients to adapt and evolve the tasks as needed. All my experience over the years with on-site robotic integrations has really helped guide my approach in what is a “neat idea” and what will actually work. Helping to design not just the software, but also what the software needs to do is not only challenging but makes every day exciting.”

Greensea will provide the engineering services supporting the integration of Amarda DPC on the OPENSEA platform. Armada will be implementing Greensea’s over-the-horizon command and control suite, SafeC2, as the backbone for Dynamic Payload Control.

  • Richmond, VT. Wednesday 01stJune 2022 – Marine robotics technology specialist Greensea Systems Inc. (Greensea) today announces the launch of Bayonet Ocean Vehicles, a new company created to develop, manufacture, and distribute a line of amphibious robots recently acquired from C-2 Innovations Inc.

The deal includes the acquisition of the IP and inventory of C-2 Innovations’ crawling robot product line. The robots have been rebranded and are launched to market as the Bayonet 150, Bayonet 250, and Bayonet 350 vehicles.

Bayonet joins the Greensea group of companies as an independent entity managed by the Greensea Executive Team. Founder of C-2 Innovations Arnis Mangolds joins Bayonet Ocean Vehicles as VP Programs, and previous C-2 Innovations’ Principal Investigator employee, Mike Farinella takes the role of Senior Engineer of the new company. The company is based in Plymouth, Massachusetts, co-located with Greensea, in a newly renovated 17,000 sq.ft state-of-the art manufacturing facility with waterfront access for year-round testing and training.

Bayonet Ocean Vehicles will be attending the Underwater Defence Technology (UDT) conference in Rotterdam and exhibiting a model of the new crawler, the Bayonet 250 on Booth D20

On announcing the launch of Bayonet Ocean Vehicles Ben Kinnaman, founder and CEO of both Greensea and Bayonet commented, “We have been working with C-2 Innovations since 2018, providing them with a C2 software suite built on OPENSEA. The seafloor crawling robot systems they developed are unique because they fill a void in autonomous ocean systems as they can work in the surf zone and carry larger sensor payloads on the seafloor. Bayonet has the resources to scale and advance the product line, and strategically, the crawler product line complements Greensea’s autonomy portfolio for defense applications.”

Bayonet Ocean Vehicles joins the Greensea company portfolio and with that backing has begun larger-scale commercialization of the seafloor crawling robot product line. The Bayonet product line will feature Greensea’s fully open architecture software platform, OPENSEA, which includes precision navigation, payload integration, autonomy, and over-the-horizon command and control. Bayonet has already secured several defense contracts as the platforms are being adopted into sensor placement and Explosive Ordnance Disposal missions. The company will launch a commercial variant of the platform in summer 2022 focused on hydrographic survey, wind farm survey and maintenance, as well as coastal dredging support.

Bayonet Ocean Vehicles’ Vice President of Operations Rich Amirault adds, “Because the conditions that these vehicles operate under – very shallow water, heavy surf, and poor visibility – are the perfect environments for improvised mines, providing an autonomous solution for EOD missions is a necessity. We are building vehicles to go where boats, divers, and ROVs simply cannot go, using software that is proven on thousands of vehicles. It’s exciting to be with the company from the start, making products that I believe in.”

Deployable from land or water independent of weather, the range of Bayonet crawlers have been designed to transit along the ocean floor as well as on land, making them the only robotic platform in the world capable of working between 40fsw and the dunes on the beach as well as in the deep ocean. Their application includes amphibious operations and littoral warfare such as mine detection and clearance, seafloor, beach zone and river surveys, environmental, monitoring and wharf inspections.

  • Richmond, Vermont, USA, 17th January 2023 – The two largest software companies in ocean robotics, Greensea Systems, Inc. creator of the open architecture platform OPENSEA®, and SeeByte, with their mission-level autonomy system Neptune and embedded Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), have continued their collaboration to provide a comprehensive solution for ocean robotics operators, from vehicle platform to operation center.

The two companies are working together to provide advanced autonomy and sensor processing solutions that complement each other and push the cutting-edge of underwater robotics.

“I have had a long history with Greensea Systems. First, I was a customer of theirs at SeaBotix. Then I became a competitor to them in my early days with SeeByte. Now, I am proud to partner with them to advance the cutting-edge underwater robotics technology. Autonomy and advanced sensor processing go hand in hand. The tetherless ROV technology that we are building together under DIU will be game changing.” says Leverett Bezanson, SeeByte Engineering Manager US operations.

The two companies first came together in 2021 to field an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) solution under a DoD OTA (Other Transaction Agreement) led by the DIU (Defense Innovation Unit). This collaboration has resulted in a comprehensive solution built by two industry leaders. The tetherless ROV shown below will feature Greensea Autonomy built in EOD workspace, and SeeByte AI/ML Sensor processing with their video and forward looking sonar ATR.

Over the last two years the partnership has grown to the point that Greensea and SeeByte are presenting complementary concepts. Shown below is Scott Reed CTO of SeeByte (r) presenting alongside Ben Kinneman (l) at the Canadian MCM Symposium.

US MCM and EOD Defense Units will not be the only ones to see the benefit of this integration, as the resulting vehicle perception, over the horizon command and control, and ML and AI ATR pipeline will also be available in the new commercially available OPENSEA Edge system from Greensea and the ATR system from SeeByte.

In common with the development of many autonomous maritime systems, the initial funding that enabled fast-paced roll-out has come from the military, but the rest of the undersea industry now gets to benefit, as Ben Kinnaman, Greensea CEO states: “Thanks to defense funding, and our willingness to enter into partnerships such as the one here with SeeByte, OPENSEA products will accelerate the viability, reduce the risk and cost, and increase the uptake of subsea autonomy in the commercial marine sphere. The more rapid development of capabilities such as tetherless, over-the-horizon operation, enhanced object recognition and mission-based AI will provide a huge boost in slower autonomy adopting industries, such as offshore energy and ocean science.”

Both Greensea and SeeByte will be attending Oceanology International and WEST2023 in February 2023, if you would like to meet either company or both at the same time please contact them through the websites below.

  • OPENSEA Edge is a modular edge computing module with perception support for autonomous underwater robots based on Greensea’s OPENSEA open architecture software platform.

Richmond, Vermont, USA, 31st January 2023 – Greensea Systems, Inc. (Greensea), the industry leader in marine robotic software solutions, has launched its latest product, OPENSEA Edge that promises to bring true autonomy to ocean robotics.

Greensea was founded with the vision to improve the working relationship between humans and machines in the marine environment. Launching its latest product, OPENSEA Edge, is a further step towards this vision. OPENSEA Edge delivers the technologies required to advance ocean robotics into the next generation.

Based on Greensea’s well-established open architecture platform, OPENSEA, OPENSEA Edge offers the next level of operator capability. While OPENSEA provides the software capabilities of navigation, control, autonomy, perception, and long-range communications, OPENSEA Edge provides a modular, hardware agnostic processing platform, that converts a traditional ROV into one with autonomy, AI, vehicle perception and tetherless, over-the-horizon, communication and control. Essentially, it is a convenient add-on package to deliver integrated edge processing and perception system integration to a traditional ROV.

“I founded Greensea to develop technology that would improve the working relationship between operators and vehicles. OPENSEA Edge is the embodiment of that effort. Leveraging more than a decade and a half of experience in open architecture robot software, OPENSEA Edge delivers an edge-processing solution for ocean vehicles with control, autonomy, perception, and sea-floor-to-over-the-horizon communications. With OPENSEA Edge, Greensea is leading the way towards subsea robot residency and extended reach”, says Greensea founder and CEO Ben Kinnaman.

OPENSEA Edge utilizes parallel NVIDIA processors to handle sonar and video perception feeds while providing autonomy, communications, and task management for the robot. This platform puts a tremendous amount of processing power at the edge, right on the robot, where it can work directly with sensor data and make decisions for the vehicle. OPENSEA’s Safe C2 software package for low bandwidth and high latency communications links provides a seafloor to over-the-horizon communications solution for operators supervising the robot. With the open architecture framework of OPENSEA and available processing space, developers can install their own autonomy and perception-handling software, including AI/ML libraries.

Originally developed and tested for military use, OPENSEA Edge has been deployed on untethered ROVs as well as seafloor-crawling robots in Mine Countermeasure and Explosive Ordnance Disposal applications. OPENSEA Edge has been used to retrofit traditional commercial ROVs as well as the basis of new vehicle builds. With proven performance in military applications, Greensea is now offering OPENSEA Edge as a commercial product. As the subsea industry looks forward to the future of cost-effective and persistent operations offshore, OPENSEA Edge will be the open architecture processing foundation the industry builds upon.

Greensea is an expert in ROV control and autonomy, and through collaboration with other subsea technology leaders, OPENSEA Edge has been able to deliver a complete solution. One example of such, is Greensea’s collaboration with UK-headquartered SeeByte, specialist in Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) technology. The ATR system uses fast, machine learning techniques to detect and classify targets from forward looking sonar data. Any ROV equipped with OPENSEA Edge can now identify targets, based on an extensive and growing internal library of past experiences.

With edge processing, ROVs come alive. Data processing, navigation, and control on the vehicle allow for decision making on the edge. This paves the way for redundancy, failure mitigation, and the platform required to integrate new levels of autonomy. OPENSEA Edge is a ‘brain in a box’- a modular and vehicle-agnostic autonomy solution addressing the future requirements of manufacturers, service providers, and system integrators as the industry looks to a future of autonomous and unmanned operations.

  • Armach Robotics, Inc. (Armach), has passed a critical milestone by successfully operating its Armach Hull Service Robotic hull cleaning service in full over-the-horizon (OTH) mode.

Plymouth, MA, 20th Dec 2022 – Earlier this month, Armach achieved a critical milestone during a demonstration of the in-water hull service robot (HSR). Armach’s hull service robot, in the water in Norfolk, VA, was monitored and controlled by staff at Armach’s command center in Plymouth, MA, using a 4G modem providing over-the-air connectivity.

Once the comms connection was made between Norfolk and Plymouth, the vehicle was able to complete its pre-dive checks on the pier. This involved full system checks with commands being sent from Armach's home office, nearly 600 miles away.

Cody Peyres, Armach’s Operations Manager takes up the story: “After verifying the capability to successfully OTH control the vehicle from the safety of the pier, confidence levels were high enough to proceed to additional in-water testing. The vehicle was launched into the harbor and released. The Plymouth-based operator was able to fly the vehicle from the launch point at the pier, and make a controlled approach to the side of the ship. Once there, it was able to attach itself successfully, and travel along the ship's side performing a short test cleaning protocol.“

As Cody Peyres elaborates, “We continue to leverage Greensea's OPENSEA open architecture control software, fused with Armach’s On-Hull navigation solution from the HSR’s myriad sensors, providing rock-solid vehicle control. We also knew that Greensea’s Safe C2, a distance operation solution also part of the OPENSEA suite, had already proved that it was operationally viable for conducting advanced intervention tasks with ROVs. Bringing the two together in our vehicle, which has different demands from a more traditional ROV, represented an important milestone.”

During this trial, it was also demonstrated how the HSR can recognize objects in its planned path of transit, autonomously navigate around these, and return to its originally planned path of operation - also referred to as an obstacle detection and avoidance manoeuvre.

John Dunn, VP Operations at Armach and pilot for this first OTH flight adds, “Flying the vehicle from Plymouth and landing on the BB64 was a euphoric experience, as we reached one more milestone on our technology roadmap. We were absolutely geeking out in Plymouth. The technology to do this isn’t new or even new to the market, however, getting it incorporated onto our platform, while our collective teams continue to develop and iterate our technical offering, was still a huge lift. My hats off to the Software, Hardware and Operations teams for pulling together and moving the ball during this already busy operation.”

The demonstration completes another key milestone in Armach’s roadmap to its full technical offering. Future state will include small footprint robotics systems that are able to launch, clean and recover automatically all while supervised remotely from Armach’s Plymouth, Massachusetts, headquarters. These units, in addition to installation in port infrastructure, can be resident on ships of all classes able to conduct hull cleaning maintenance at the convenience of the vessel's schedule on a global basis. The ability to deliver autonomous, efficient cleaning on micro-fouling means the cleaning process can be conducted in short time frames, and does not impact on the vessels’ turnaround time.

Key to Armach’s proposition is that the system provided a previously unprecedented level of ‘Hull Intelligence’, effectively creating a hull condition survey every time it cleans a hull. This allows owners to understand their hull condition in ‘real time’ and make decisions that will save time and money. This key phase will allow Armach to build, develop and iterate the robotics platforms, and prove that the technology and model work in the real world.

  • OPENSEA Edge
OPENSEA Edge is a robot-agnostic edge processing system for vehicle-based autonomy, perception, and communications based on the open architecture of OPENSEA....

  • OPENSEA Edge combines the power of OPENSEA with a edge computing package to provide an easy solution for system integrators or vehicle developers moving towards full subsea and untethered autonomy. OPENSEA Edge presents the tried-and-true navigation, vehicle control, and autonomy solutions of OPENSEA with new OPENSEA technologies for objective-based autonomy, perception system integration, and low-bandwidth communications as a platform solution that can port to any vehicle system and support a wide range of applications. The OPENSEA Edge system is based on two NVIDIA edge processors and a Gigabit Ethernet network architecture while providing subsea connector interfaces for the robot, video sensors, sonar sensors, navigation sensors, and acoustic communications.

OPENSEA Edge is designed to assist manufacturers and integrators address the autonomy requirements of the next generation of ocean robots easily and cost effectively while benefiting from the ever-expanding network of OPENSEA users.

Edge computing places computational processes, the processing and consumption of data, as near to the source of the data as possible. In the context of ocean robots, it places the software responsible for processing and acting on sensor data on the robot itself versus with the operator. For many applications this is nothing new, but as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) find relevance in a world requiring persistence, residency, and long-range standoff deployments, ROV architecture has to abandon the “topside” architectures in favor of edge processing. ROVs have to develop brains.

With edge computing on the ROV, the architecture is not burdened with providing for high-bandwidth communications between the operator and robot. Instead of raw video, sonar, sensor data, and command and control signals moving up and down a tether, situational awareness and work instructions can move instead. This allows us to consider using low-bandwidth and high-latency links, like acoustic and satellite links instead of fiber optic and Ethernet tethers.

With edge processing our ROVs come alive. Data processing, navigation, and control on the vehicle allow for decision making on the edge as well. This paves the way for redundancy, failure mitigation, and the platform required to integrate new levels of autonomy. With a modular and vehicle-agnostic autonomy solution, a “brain in a box”, addressing future requirements for residency, uncrewed operations, and extended reach is within reach of any manufacturer, service provider, or system integrator.

    The Human Connection

Perhaps one of the greatest blockages to realizing a long-range standoff, over-the-horizon, uncrewed, or resident solution for ROVs is the human connection. How do we maintain a meaningful data link in real offshore operations? The solution thus far has been robust and high-bandwidth data links, more or less a really long tether to remote operators. This infrastructure is likely not scalable to levels that will bring about widespread and practical adoption of this capability. To allow for viable autonomous “ROV” operations, we need to provide solutions that will work over very low-bandwidth and very high-latency communications links – 100bps acoustic communications and 100kbps satellite links.

Through funding from the US Department of Defense, Greensea has developed a long-range standoff solution for remote systems called Safe C2 that is protocol agnostic and designed for adhoc and multimode networks. Safe C2 allows for seafloor to over-the-horizon communications. More than just a communications handler, Safe C2 ensures the task an operator is conducting with a remote system is successful and solves the greater problem of removing ROV crew from the sea.

Safe C2 integrates tightly to the autonomy system on the edge and the operator, or network of operators, at the shore side to understand the tasking of the ROV. Using compression, prioritization, and scaling algorithms, Safe C2 provides the data needed by the operator to make decisions and the data needed by the ROV to accomplish tasks successfully. With tight integration to the OPENSEA perception system, operators are provided situational awareness required to effectively accomplish critical tasks in complex environments.

  • Safe C2

  • HARDWARE AGNOSTIC & SCALABLE

Safe C2™ is a platform independent, plug-in solution allowing the operation of ROVs from safe standoff distances for military or commercial use. It allows the ROV pilot to be anywhere on-shore while controlling a vehicle anywhere off-shore. Using Safe C2, the operator no longer needs to be on the deployment vessel, reducing risk while freeing up valuable crew space.

Safe C2 extends Greensea’s current navigation, command, and control systems installed in thousands of ROVs around the globe including the current US Navy EOD SeaBotix vLBV ROV, the Next Generation EOD Underwater Response Vehicle, and workclass ROVs. Supporting a wide range of COTS data links, Safe C2 is technically viable for the expeditionary maritime EOD CONOPS, and operationally viable for conducting advanced intervention tasks with ROVs.

The technology hurdle addressed in Safe C2, which makes the long range control of a ROV practical, is handling of the data stream back and forth between operator and vehicle. Safe C2 manages the data stream by transmitting the least amount of data necessary and sychronizing data so that even with slight delays, the sonar and video will remain in synch when the operator sees them.
