  • Techno Fysica BV, a global load monitoring solution provider, has been awarded the design, manufacturing and completion of the vessel-specific load measurements for Allseas’ heavy lift and pipelay vessel Pioneering Spirit.

    At our Centre for Measurement Techniques, based in The Netherlands, we designed various customized load measurement solutions which include 51.5 MN capacity shear pin type load cells for the lever pivots of the vessel’s topsides lift system (TLS), as well as structural stress in the hull connection beam, the stinger hang-off supports and the rollerbox forces during pipelaying.

    The final deliveries we made for the TLS comprised no less than 18 large forged shaft pieces, each weighing 8 tonnes, for the so-called yoke foundation supports and adapter box.

    Techno Fysica also took care of calibration of all load monitoring sensors and systems.

  • Wire Rope Fatigue & Condition Monitor

  • A Machine Vision application can easily control the wire rope diameter variation which is fitted within an active heave compensation system to monitor the wire rope condition and/or its health.

    The Machine Vision Application will monitor wire-ropes which are installed on a section of wire-rope under constant load (pre-tension) e.g. between the capstan and the spooling winch, by measuring for each part of the rope its size and diameters (ovality, spikes), bends, cumulated fatigues and temperature.

    Different sheave routings can be considered with a fixed or variating wrap angle to be managed by the software.

    To check shape and ovality of diameters from two or four directions the follow‐up of the variations on wire rope diameter is carried out with a dedicated monitoring system based on a Machine Vision Application with standard (or low‐cost) cameras linked to a controller. Camera management and calculations are done on the controller (min, max, combination of pictures, average values, etc.).

    Ethernet link allows for a connection to a remote monitoring server, mainly for data logging (diameters and pictures) but also for setting, display, post analysis. The diameters values calculated by the Controller are also sent to the server system.

    On its dedicated monitoring server pictures of wire rope shapes and thermal images will be logged. Digital outputs on imagers are available to send alarms allowing a connection to a server or remote PC for automatic and continuous temperature and picture logging (and also for menu set-up).

    Temperature (optional) by a thermal imager facing the section of wire rope the most subjected to temperature increase (e.g. Automatic Heave Controller). Expected area includes a segment of cable and a part of sheave, in which the average temperature of a determined area is recorded. Such temperature measurement can be performed with a simple or more advanced (ethernet) pyrometer, but engineers may also be interested to have a thermal picture of the rope plus part of the sheave. Diameter values and temperature values will be logged in the same way as we do for the bending/fatigue.

    The Vision Application logs permanently alarms, anomalies, new statuses, etc. It offers the possibility to display in real-time graphs of the following data: bends, fatigue, temperature, diameters, spikes. Data can be exported to external files in compatible excel format.

    Under the menu Wire Rope Maintenance a certain length of wire-rope can be cut (e.g. to remove or to shift a particularly stressed section of wire-rope to a section seldom used).

    Furthermore, the total wire rope can be "mirrowed", e.g. after spooling the wire rope onto another winch.
