  • SMC announces a new release of the SMC IMU-10 & IMU-00 Marine Motion Sensors.  The product updates concern three core changes to all our new delivered Motion  Sensors and these changes are available from hardware version 8.6

    Algorithm Update

    The new version of the SMC IMU heave algorithm provides a higher performance across the range of complex Heave motions giving a significant improvement in performance on the existing system.

    Ethernet as Standard

    As a standard Ethernet communication has been added to the IMU units with the introduction 10/100mbit Ethernet communication. Data can be either broadcast across the network or set to two target IP’s. The standard communication format is a UDP.

    Multiple Output Serial Protocols

    The IMU sensors now support two separate serial communication port protocols as a standard set up from the configuration software on the IMU-10 & IMU-00 sensors. Along with the standard Port 1 & 2 RS232 and RS422 output broadcasting one protocol, a second different protocol can be transmitted on a third RS232 Bidirectional port.

    Additional Hardware Upgrade

    In addition to the core IMU changes SMC have increase the number of cable cores to 19 from 12 providing the additional communication options as standard. The 19 core cable and connector are compatible with the previous 12 core cable and connector for seamless upgrades and product continuity.

  • SMC is pleased to announce it has been selected to assist ABB with the development of their AHC winch application using the marine certified ACS880 drive. SMC has developed and integrated a specific ABB MODBUS TCP protocol for the ACS880 as a standard into the SMC IMU motion sensors.

    Solution

    The marine certified ACS880 winch drives now include an option for Active Heave Compensation (AHC) as a built-in feature in the drive. The AHC solution is fully integrated in the drive for ease of use and eliminates the need for expensive external third party AHC control systems. SMC motion sensors were chosen by ABB for use with their AHC system using the ACS880 drives for electric offshore winch solutions. SMC motion sensors provide excellent performance and SMC’s flexible communication system has assisted in a smooth development of a specific client preferred solution. Together this is a unique AHC solution that enables new or existing retrofit installations to have a seamless integration for a wide range of motor types. The solution can be set up with the minimum of engineering disruption and down time which is critical to a vessel’s operation.

    Communication

    The SMC motion sensor and the ACS880 drive communicate using Ethernet modbus TCP protocol. The communication system has a failover system connecting up to four ACS880 drives in parallel for critical redundancy support. The ABB ACS880 winch drive communication integration is now a standardized feature in all SMC motion sensors.

  • The SMC Helideck Monitoring System provides Motion and meteorological data displayed in real time in an Easy to read graphical interface for safe offshore helideck operations.

    The Helideck Monitoring System provides information concerning the offshore helideck movements, weather data and vessel position to the bridge as well as to Heliports and land-based operators.

    Meteorological instruments from almost any manufacturer can be integrated to the system to meet client specifications. Many Helideck Monitoring Systems are customized for specific client requirements incorporating additional environmental and weather data. The HMS system can be expanded to a complete Met-Ocean system with many additional options and configurations while maintaining the HMS specification standards.

    The Helideck Monitoring System has a set of external communication available with linking offshore weather and planning services as Helimet.
