  • At OTC 2017 in Houston, 1 - 4 May, Alfa Laval shares its broad spectrum of solutions for the oil and gas industry for optimizing heat transfer, separation and flow technologies.   • At OTC 2017 in Houston, 1 - 4 May, Alfa Laval shares its broad spectrum of solutions for the oil and gas industry for optimizing heat transfer, separation and flow technologies. One of the products on display is Alfa Laval PureBallast -  now type approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

    PureBallast, which was the first commercially available ballast water treatment system, is a chemical-free system sold and serviced by Alfa Laval. A vital component of the system is the Enhanced UV Reactor, which was developed jointly by Alfa Laval and Wallenius Water based on Wallenius Water Technology.

    On 23 December 2016, Alfa Laval received U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) type approval for the third generation of its ballast water treatment system, PureBallast. The approval allows ship owners who deballast in United States waters to make a confident choice of treatment technology.

    The USCG based its type approval of PureBallast on CMFDA/FDA testing conducted at DHI in Denmark. This testing was performed using the same hardware, power consumption and flow as the already market-leading IMO-certified version of the PureBallast 3 family. Outside the United States, where PureBallast has been type approved using the MPN method, the USCG-certified system will operate in IMO mode and can treat water with UV transmittance as low as 42%.

    PureBallast has a flexible construction based on four different UV reactor sizes. This allows for optimized sizing and competitive solutions over a wide flow range. The current type approval covers flows of 150-3000 m3/h based on the 300 and 1000 m3/h reactor sizes, while type approval for systems based on 170 and 600 m3/h reactors is expected soon. The delay between approvals is due to the evaluation of the mathematically modelled reactor scaling, which is a new process for the USCG. Additional time is needed to review the already completed verification from the independent DNV GL lab.

    Prepared for revised IMO G8 guidelines and more

    Besides meeting the demands of the USCG, the PureBallast 3 family is prepared for the revised IMO G8 guidelines determined by the recent MEPC70 meeting. Pending a few final tests of biological efficacy, a completed application for an updated G8 certificate is expected during the first half of 2017.

    Likewise, Alfa Laval is prepared for the increased demand triggered by the ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention. Having sold over 1200 systems to date, including hundreds installed as retrofits, the company has the knowledge, project management and production muscle to handle the coming retrofit wave.

  • The Alfa Laval TK20 semi-welded gasketed plate heat exchanger is optimized to deliver the best in performance and reliability for heating and cooling of aggressive media. A full-size model will be on display at OTC 2017.

    The TK20 is developed for all applications where high efficiency is key, such as evaporators, condensers, desuperheaters, cascade duties and economizers/subcoolers. It is optimized for the use of natural refrigerants, NH3 and CO2, for low and high pressures. The new plate design is especially suitable for flooded evaporation duties.

    The heat exchanger features innovative developments that include Alfa Laval RefTight™ – the unique gasket groove design with maximum gasket support and minimum gasket contact, Alfa Laval CurveFlow™ – patented distribution zone with more energy efficiency per m2 plate surface, and Alfa Laval ClipGrip™ – patented mounting method that attaches the gasket securely, gripping both sides of the plate, ensuring that it stays in place when opening.

    The TK20’s compact design makes it easy to open for inspection and cleaning, which facilitates higher serviceability. Its flexible configuration allows the heat transfer area to be modified according to the user’s application and needs. The welded channels with minimum gasket contact also create a robust leakage-proof unit.

  • Safe, rapid mixing of bulk mud additives

    The Alfa Laval Vortex Dust Free Speed Mixing system provides a safe, rapid and adaptable method of mixing bulk mud additives directly into the active mud system.  The system is capable of rapidly and effectively mixing bulk mud additives, especially barite, at rates as fast as one ton per minute with little to no dusting. Its simple yet robust design stands up to demanding oil field conditions, and its versatility allows for a high degree of configuration customization to fit numerous installation demands such as limited overhead clearance or available footprint space.

    Basic equipment

    The Alfa Laval Vortex DFSM system consists of one or two Alfa Laval Vortex Shear-Mixers or mixing eductors linked to an 80 PSI pressure rated receiving vessel via stainless steel piping and a patented V-Slide mixer, which helps prevent bridging and rat-holing of dry product at the bottom of the vessel. The vent port of the receiving vessel is usually equipped with a Spintop Air Cyclone, which recovers dust that would otherwise vent to the atmosphere.
